The Best Electric Beard Trimmers & More!

Manual vs Electric Razor

Ahhhh…. so here we are at Electric Beard Trimmers and I am actually going to bring up a Manual vs Electric Razor question.

Okay so here is the funny thing…

Are you ready?

I use BOTH!

Kind of…

I actually use an electric beard trimmer not an electric razor (hence the photo above). However I have been asked many  times about the two. So I figured why not shed some light on the subject.

In the past I have used an electric razor. So, I can discuss my thoughts along with the pros and cons of both the manual and electric razor.

The debate is very valid yet they do two separate things. An electric razor can give you a nice close shave. But nothing is going to get as close as a manual razor in my opinion.

For example:

For me to trim my goatee, side burns and beard… I will use am electric beard trimmer.

For my neck and my shaping of my particular style I use a manual razor. I could use an electric razor for my neck but for me a manual razor is quick and much closer of a shave.

What one should you use?

Depending on what your specific needs are, the choice and comparison of a manual vs electric razor is going to be the deciding factor for you.

I’ll go over some basic questions and give my thoughts below. My scenario is obviously a lot different than most since I do an artistic thing with my beard.

I have to, or otherwise I would have to change my beard logo and t-shirts. 😉

On With The Comparison!

Depending on the look you are going for that is what will probably make you decide your preference.

If you’re someone who wakes up every morning or evening and goes to work with a completely shaven face then here is some questions you need to ask yourself:

  • Is time of the essence?
  • How close do you want your shave?
  • Do you want to spend money on more products for your shave?

Lets tackle each point.

  • Is time of the essence?

If time is of the essence I would suggest an electric razor. They work great and you don’t need any prep. For example… shaving cream, hot towel/water.. etc. Most electric razors now have docks that keep them charged and lubricated. Just pick em up and use. In less than a minute you’re clean shaven and ready to go.

  • How close do you want your shave?

If you are looking for a close no stubble shave than I highly suggest a manual razor. No electric razor (I don’t care how fancy or expensive) is going to beat a manual razor. I would even take a disposable plastic cheap razor over any so called Cadillac in the electric razor world any day when it comes to the  “closest” shave you can get.

  • Do you want to spend money on more products for your shave?

In this department, hands down the electric razor wins! It’s a one stop shop, do it all device. Also, don’t get me wrong, you can get a very, very, very close shave from an electric razor. Not baby butt smooth, but very close. With the manual razor you are going to need to purchase more product regularly. Mainly blades and shaving cream which in the long run costs more money.

In what situation would you choose one over the other?

Well, any kind of shaving that would require and type of artistic style I would probably stick with a manual razor over an electric. But, you would probably end up using a combination of both anyway.

For that 3 day beard stubble look there are actual electric razors that have a setting that let you keep that look daily. However, you would still want to shave your neckline and cheekbone area with a manual razor.

The Verdict:

Well, in all honesty there is no clear-cut winner or answer for the manual vs electric razor debate.

I believe it comes down to personal preference and your specific needs.

Having said that. If you want the smoothest shave you can get.. I say MANUAL is the only way to go.

If you want a really good decent shave and like to save time… ELECTRIC would be my choice.

My number 1 top picks for an electric razor and a manual razor are below:

  1. Brandon

Very entertaining post. Personally I use the electric razor, as I let my beard get long and bushy THEN I shave it off, this is usually my cycle and something that works for me so I have stuck with it. At least I don’t have to shave almost every day. Lol

Thanks for the post, looking forward to reading more of your content.

That habit will definitely save you money and time! Lol! Nice! Thanks for the comment!

  2. Matt's Mom

I can definitely see the need for both for some men. I recently went on vacation and forgot my razor. I used my cousin’s electric razor and I felt like I was going to cut myself, and that it was doing a great job. Of course it did just fine and I did not cut myself. All perception for me. My son is just starting to “shave” his face. His work says he cannot have any stubble….lol or peach fuzz in his case. What is the best for something like that? A small razor?

In all honesty you can’t go wrong with a simple double bladed cheap disposable razor for his situation.
